About Patricia Schaefer
Patricia is a retired pediatric occupational therapist who lives on Seabrook Island, SC with her husband. Although always fond of taking photos, Patricia's interest in photography peeked after she moved to Seabrook Island and found herself surrounded by beautiful nature and wildlife. She took her first photos of the dolphin in 2006 and hasn't stopped since. She is self-taught but has taken several courses at the Charleston Center for Photography, online, and has learned much from her peers. She has expanded her work to include street and travel photography.
She received her first award for her work in 2007 from Dunes Properties for Carolina Anole. She has since won several local club contests for photos and her work was featured on the cover of the Neighbors Magazine in 2011. She was published in the South Carolina Wildlife Magazine in March-April 2012 with photography of the dolphin strand feeding and in January 2013 and June 2013 in the Charleston Magazine and 2013-14 Island Magazine. She received the First Federal People's Choice Award for Dolphin Strand Feeding Line Up in October 2012. In February 2013 she received honorable mention in the Members Exhibition, Charleston Artist Guild(CAG), for Great Blues Lunch. She received first place in the 2013 Piccolo Spoleto Festival Juried Art Exhibition for Heron Steals Dinner.She received honorable mention for Summer's End and of interest for Statuesque in the CAG Signature Exhibit.She won thePeople's Choice Award in 2013 for Heron Steals Dinner and 2nd place in 2014 for Market Vendor at the Well's Gallery. She received honorable mention for Statuesque in the Charleston Center for Photography 2014 Space Exhibit and 3rd place in the CAG Member's Exhibit. She was a juried Artist in 2015, 2017, 2018 at Artfields show in Lake City,SC for Statuesque, Double Vision and Sea Gates. She received Best in Show and 1st place in the SCW/Hampton Wildlife Fund for Dolphin Strand Feeding and 3rd place for Dinner Time. In 2023, she received 1st place in the members exhibition at the CAG for Skid Row.Her photographs have been used on educational signage at Seabrook and Kiawah Islands, the Georgia Aquarium, Crooked River State Park, Georgia. Her photo was published in the BEC calendar 2017 and National Geographic Channel published several of her photos to advertise The Secret Life of Predator September 2013.
She has self-published over 40 photo books and several are available for sale including: Wild Things on Seabrook Island, Dolphin Strand Feeding, The Colors of Seabrook Island, Colors of the Lowcountry and Dolphins From A-Z.
